The San Ramon Police Department is asking residents and business owners with security cameras to take part in a new crime prevention program. Police recently introduced Citizen's View, a confidential registry of privately owned cameras across the city, will be used as an investigative tool.

SRPD is encouraging existing security cameras to register with the program, which will keep officers aware that a camera exists when investigating a crime in that area. Although police will not have access to footage from registered cameras, police may contact the owner and request a copy of their footage for evidence if a crime occurs in the vicinity.
The cameras may have unknowingly recorded the crime, possible suspects or an escape route the criminals used, a release stated.

In recent years, video footage has become an imperative investigative tool key to solving crimes and San Ramon Police routinely asks businesses and residents for footage from their camera following criminal activity. Still, contacting every resident or business looking for footage can be time consuming.

"Criminals don't like being caught on video and will think twice if they know San Ramon residents and business share their footage with the police," the release continued. "Several residents and businesses already have security cameras in our city and are always willing to assist their police department. We want to make it easier for residents and get more people involved in keeping their community safe."

For more information or to register, visit www.sanramon.ca.gov/police www.sanramon.ca.gov/police and enter the Citizen's View page to print the registry form and warning sign for your residence or business. A police employee will then contact you to verify the information after registration.
