Live Oak Elementary locked down as police search for burglary suspects
Two arrested for first degree burglary

Bookmark and Share
Live Oak Elementary School (5151 Sherwood Way) was locked down for about an hour Wednesday afternoon after administrators received a report that burglary suspects were in the area.

San Ramon Police requested a precautionary lockdown around 11:50 a.m. after a home burglary was reported nearby, district Community Relations Coordinator Terry Koehne said. Two suspects were apprehended around and police instructed Live Oak to end the lockdown around 12:50 p.m.

Police initially received the burglary call from an address Longleaf Circle in the Dougherty Valley. at 11:08 a.m., a release stated. Officers detained one suspect as he exited the residence and the second suspect fled the residence. Officers searched the area and found the outstanding suspect in the 17000 block of Bollinger Canyon Road around 12:10 p.m.

Both suspects were arrested for first degree burglary and there are no outstanding suspects. The investigation is ongoing.

Students were dismissed at 1 p.m. per the regular Wednesday schedule but an afternoon kindergarten class with a 12:20 p.m. dismissal was held inside until the lockdown was lifted. Parents waiting to pick up their children were instructed to wait in their cars with the doors locked.

"Everybody did a fabulous job, the principal whole staff were so calm and did a great job in keeping students calm and alleviating any fears for parents," Koehne noted.

Other lockdowns have occurred within San Ramon Valley Unified School district, most recently in November 2012 when Stone Valley Middle School and Doris Eaton School (a private school) were placed on lockdown as a precaution during a police chase. Local schools were ordered to shelter in place in December following reports of a natural gas leak.

I am an Live Oak fifth grader. My class was forced to shut down the computers when our assistant principal was on the loudspeaker and told everyone to hide. Later when we had lunch close to the end of the day we were told the burglar was across the street. All kids had to leave school ammediatly. In the beginning it was like the longest lockdown ever. The crazy thing was that we had a fire drill in the morning at 10:10.

I am a live oak fifth grader and I was crying in the classroom hoping to live. I was very scared but my teacher told me she will do anything to keep us safe and I felt better. We were starving and normally our lunch would be at 12:05 but we ate at 12:55 because of the lockdown drill. Some people in my class were laughing and I was sad. My friend cried because the people were near kindergarden and here brother was in 1st grade. I am so happy I lived. I love my school and respect the safety they assisted.

Hearty congratulations to Live Oak Principal & her staff for the great job done in taking care of students in this situation. Special kudos to Police department in timely manner alerting school.

Note - more burglars are sneaking now a days into Windemere & Gale Ranch communities. More alertness is required by residents & other responsible citizens.

Once again great job by Police & Live Oak Staff

I am a student in 5th grade at Live Oak. This has brought fright to my classmate knowing that her brother was in kindergarten, which was closet to the scene. We all heard helicopters flying above us. Are teach calmed us down soon. Our assistant principal told us the real case and said that the robbers were arrested and sent of to jail. I felt so relieved because the classroom was so quiet I could loose my temper. But I really feel thankful for the police and our schools protection.

I am a fourth grader in Live Oak

Just when lunch started, the loud speaker said,"There is going to be a lockdown." The principal told us this is real so we had to eat quietly. I was a little scared and I ate my lunch slowly. After a while everyone got bored so we played heads up seven up. There were only three classes and some third graders. We waited for an hour and the loud speaker told us the lockdown is over.Everyone thought we were going to stay over night but when we heard it was over, everyone cheered.

Were there any other details involved with this burglary? Crimes like these are more and more commonplace in the area and it's sickening.

This ongoing burglary issue in San Ramon needs to be fixed ASAP. It's heartening to see the kids' comments about the y'day incident. Hope San Ramon county takes special action on this immediately !

We can't just let our pets go out on their own, let the kids bike up and down the street, or leave our doors unlocked like we used to. To think this would happen in broad daylight a few steps from my house. I lived and grew up here for 20 years, and the everyone always says "nothing ever happens in San Ramon." Well we can't say that anymore can we?
