Ah, shades of my own memory of my own son at Cal High in the mid-90's. He did a "slip" that cost him dearly and held him up for public scrutiny and teacher ridicule...Well never forget it, it deeply wounded him, even though he knew he set himself up for it. So I have compassion for this young man and his family having this splashed across the newspaper, if not online and unfortunately, the subject of parental comment(s) that will not cease any time soon, rather, continue on no matter how he redeems himself. Hope he's in for a few years of people's "good" memory on what he did...It's a most painful life lesson, but eventually it will fade and he will be the better for it <though he will NEVER forget, nor, will his parents>

Poor Dan. I wish the express would remove this article. It's been published, they did their "job" and now we should move on, as Terry Koehne put it. Leave this family alone. Clearly someone was gunning for him/them, which is equally sad as they are an amazing family and we appreciate their leadership in this valley.

It's a shame he had to resign. The four Varsity Cheerleaders were only "suspended" for two weeks despite the fact that they were even more underage, smoking without parent permission, were photographed wearing CHS Cheer t-shirts, and posted comments bragging about their actions. They never apologized for their actions and continue with the same behavior. Additionally, they too were photographed with alcohol, only no punishment occurred as they weren't holding the drinks in their hands, only posing with all of the beer cans (that they clearly drank). They should have been removed from the team, having to step down, just as Dan if this is to be the punishment. Those cheerleaders caused more detriment to the team and entire program than this one action. It's too bad CHS is losing a valuable asset in Dan, while keeping four undeserving cheerleaders.

Wow. Thanks for further enlightenment on this matter...<makes it even more disgusting, if not totally inequitable "justice">
Personally, I don't feel the caliber of Administration at Cal High has historically been the best...I see it continues on.

I really feel that this article should be removed. I do not have a child at this school but I am a parent and I feel that this is terrible. Are we forgetting that this is a child. Sure he made a mistake but to have it published and sent out to the community is also a mistake and we should be ashamed of ourselfs for allowing this to happen. I think that the lesson has been learned without all of this.

Well it would be nice if the local media thought as well, if not the online media, but that is - in an ideal world. The news will always run it's course as you must recognize. Inequitable and unjust situations SHOULD be aired and discussed, not so much so they won't occur again, because they will. But because this is how often, a wrong is righted in some respects and attention drawn to the WHOLE story and not just part of it.

Enough is enough . . . I cannot believe this article is still posted - San Ramon Express - you are loosing readers with your lack of common sense - this is old news now. All the Cal High Administration needs to do is look up some of their other "amazing students" on Facebook to see all the photos these kids are in doing much worse! Get a grip!

CHS Administration takes no responsibility and plays favorites where it suits them. If the students involved in distasteful behavior are Cheerleaders (smoking hookah or drinking beer)or Football players (using steroids) they turn the other cheek, yet if it is a student such as this one doing nothing wrong they make an example of him. Too bad he wasn't a football player - they would have never made a big deal of it just like they didn't with the Varsity Cheerleaders.

Well they do play favorites "where it suits them" as I have also witnessed through the years. Usually? They will take the weakest link and use them as a scapegoat as an example to other students...they are well honed in this tactic.
