No win for Canyon Park homeowners
Around Town, posted by , a resident of , on Apr 14, 2010 at 10:09 am

Homeowners living near proposed interim Police Station argue to change the location again, but they don't change any minds or votes on the City Council.

After listening to this inane whining, the best outcome for the Canyon Park HOA would be for the city to develop the land as high density low income housing. Well, maybe not the best, but it would be the most satisfying.

Hm. I'm not of the mindset of "not in my neighborhood" as we deal with a sewage plant and a local highschool both with their own issues. I do believe this temp. relocation is a good thing, they really do need the space. Unlike a hospital where sirens from ambulances or a firestation where fire engines sound a siren, I don't see that noise is the issue. Nor do I perceive this in any way as a detriment to property values. Could it be citizens are more concerned about possible closer scrutiny as citizens? It does not make sense to me that there has been such opposition to this very real need by our local police department.

I find it laughable when I read the previous articles that they support the police - just don't want them around. I agree about the noise not being an issue. If I remember correctly, the fire station was built in the early 90's and that office building was there long before that. The houses were built about 6 or 7 years later. Using google, the fire station is 525 feet from the Pryfogel's house. The proposed police station is 497 feet from their house. So a fire station is okay but a police station is not? Last time I checked, fire engines respond with their sirens to a lot more incidents than the police. Do they think Swat teams are going to be rappelling out of black helicopters into their neighborhood to chase the sexual predators that like to hang out at police stations? Anybody see how ridiculous that last sentence was? If you listen to the Pryfogels, that's apparently what happens at all police stations.

Anyway, after I looked up the value of the Pryfogel's house (since they seem to be the ringleaders of the whiners) it looks more like this is about finances. According to Zillow, they paid $715,000 for their place in 2005 and it's now worth $559,000. Are they hoping if they make enough noise, the city will pay them to go away?
